Rhode Island, the first state, was the first of the thirteen original American colonies to declare independence from British rule; this signaled the beginning of the American Revolution. The state was absent from the Philadelphia Convention and did not ratify the US Constitution until after the other twelve colonies. Rhode Island is the smallest of the 50 states and covers approximately 1,545 square miles. It is bordered on the east and north by Massachusetts, on the south by Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Connecticut.
