Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States and lies along the Potomac River between the Anacostia river and Rock Creek. This 10 square mile piece of land was chosen for the capital city by George Washington and approved by the United States Congress in the 1790 Residence Act. It is not a state, and, consequently, has no voting rights in the US Congress. Washington, DC, encircled by hills and a broken plateau, rises to a maximum height of 420 ft and contains the former city of Georgetown, the villages of Anacostia, Brightwood, Tennallytown, and other suburban districts.
